LED Trade Show Lighting Made Simple

Understand brightness, color, coverage and fit. Select a topic below for a plain-English explanation and practical buying advice.

Lumens: How much light does it produce?

Lumens measure the total amount of visible light a fixture produces. A higher lumen rating means more light output. The beam pattern and distance from your graphic or product also affect how much light reaches it.

For your display: Consider both the light output and the area you need to illuminate.

Kelvin / K Rating: Does the light look warm or cool?

Color temperature is commonly described as Kelvin or a light’s K rating. It describes the color appearance of white light, not how hot a fixture gets. The trade show lighting range we generally work with is 3000K–5500K, from warmer white toward cooler, daylight-style white. A higher Kelvin number does not automatically mean a brighter light.

For your display: Matching color temperature across fixtures can help your exhibit look consistent.

Watts: How much power does it use?

Watts measure electrical power consumption, not brightness. An LED fixture can produce useful light while consuming less power than an older halogen fixture. An advertised halogen-equivalent wattage is different from actual power consumption.

For your display: Use the actual input wattage when planning electrical service, and check the power supply specifications.

Beam angle: Where does the light go?

Beam angle describes how widely a light spreads. Narrow beams concentrate light on smaller areas; wider beams cover broader areas. Distance, placement and overlapping beams affect the result.

For your display: A focused beam may suit a product or logo, while broader coverage may suit a larger graphic.

CRI: How do colors look under the light?

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) describes how faithfully a light source renders colors compared with a reference light. CRI and Kelvin describe different qualities: color rendering versus the appearance of the white light.

For your display: Color rendering matters when showing merchandise, artwork and graphics where color appearance is important.

Rated operating hours: How long should it last?

Rated life is an estimate under specified conditions, not a guarantee or warranty. LEDs can gradually lose output over time. If the manufacturer specifies L70, this refers to the estimated point when output falls to 70% of its initial level. Not every hours rating uses the same definition.

For your display: Check the manufacturer's rating and warranty separately. Heat, operating conditions and power supply performance can affect service life.

Mounting: Will it connect to my display?

TradeShowJoe can outfit compatible lights with specialty, adaptable brackets for banner stands, tubular tension fabric displays, pop-up displays, truss systems and other compatible exhibit structures. Bracket selection depends on the fixture and display.

For your display: Send a full display photo and close-ups of the mounting area and existing hardware so we can recommend a suitable combination.

Front lighting or backlighting?

Front lighting shines onto a graphic or product. Backlighting illuminates a compatible graphic from behind or within the display. TradeShowJoe provides consultation on LED backlighting products and display structures engineered for internal illumination.

For your display: For backlighting, the frame, graphic material, available space and lighting arrangement must work together.
